THE SELF METHOD

SELF-DIRECTED DISCOVERY

You already have the key.

All you need to find is the lock.

WHY ARE YOU HERE?

PHILOSOPHY

Each of these beliefs form the ideological foundation The Self Method is built upon.

The mind is a democracy.

Human beings contain competing interests, desires, fears, beliefs and experiences. The conscious decision you want to make is not always the decision that ultimately gets made.

Trying to force one part of yourself to obey another creates conflict.

Your decisions are logical.

People make choices in self-interest based on the options they believe are available. If the outcome of a choice is negative, this means the reward for making that choice outweighed the negative outcome.

If you don't understand why you are choosing something, it is because you don't understand why it makes sense.

The goal is not to prove yourself wrong.

You don't need to discover what is wrong with you before you can change. The deeper question is why the person you are today makes the decisions they make.

You don't need to defeat yourself. You need to understand yourself.

Sustainable change requires peace with yourself.

Change cannot be sustained while you are in conflict with yourself. You can force yourself to behave differently for a period of time, but lasting change requires understanding and acceptance of the direction you are moving.

When the conflict is resolved, change no longer has to be forced.

Success is defined by the person pursuing it.

You cannot begin a meaningful journey toward success without knowing what success means to you.

The first responsibility of pursuing success is deciding what success actually is.

Every decision is an experiment.

You cannot discover what brings fulfillment entirely through thought. You have to interact with the world, make choices and experience their consequences.

You cannot learn from failure if you are failing in things you did not choose yourself.

Your path does not have to look correct from the outside.

Every choice changes what you know about yourself. Some experiments succeed. Others reveal what you don't want.

If you chose the path, you are moving in the right direction.

The body is part of the conversation.

Your body is the anchor to physical reality and the source of your energy. A solid connection with the body can keep you grounded when the mind and spirit are lost or in transition.

Self development without connecting with the body is like building a race car that you can't put gas in.

Stillness creates space.

Sitting still is the most revolutionary act a human can perform. Change happens inside, the outside simply follows.

If sitting still in a quiet place puts you into a war zone, you must resolve that conflict before attempting to change your life.

The conversation is where discovery begins.

The method is simple, all you need is paper and pen. There are no rules, no regulations, nothing is off limit. It can be performed in any physical location and in any state of mind.

When you realize that you are the source of the most valuable information in your life, the practice naturally becomes the way.

Outside influence still matters.

Self-directed discovery does not mean discovering everything alone. Other people possess knowledge and perspectives that you cannot possess yourself.

Listen to everyone. Examine everything. Decide for yourself.

Independence is not always comfortable.

When you stop relying on inherited definitions of success, identity and purpose, you may discover that you don't immediately know what belongs in their place.

Sometimes you have to take down the structures supporting the life you no longer want before you can build the life you do.

Self-trust is not certainty.

Trusting yourself does not mean believing that you will always make the right decision. Failure is an essential part of discovering the life that is right for you.

Self-trust means knowing that even failure can move you closer to yourself.

Self-directed discovery does not end.

There is no final version of yourself waiting to be uncovered. You will change, your understanding will change, and what you value will change.

The goal isn't to finally figure yourself out. The goal is to become someone you can continue figuring out.

THE PROCESS

Deconstruction. Anhedonia. Reconstruction. Jao. The tools — energy, stillness, the method — are how you move through each one.
